I recently bought a "vintage" snapper rear engine series 3 that had been repowered with a B&S 286707-4029-01 circa 1995 engine.
I'm trying to find out everything I can about it to get ahead of future problems so I don't have to be one of those "HELP ME" people that show up on forums all time.
Right now, everything is running fine, I changed the blade, the air and gas filters. Good compression, no blue smoke, governor hardly kicks in even when going through very tall grass, but I'm a bit worried about the condition of the plastic pinion on the starter -- the top half is about gone, but it engages properly.
I looked at the parts manual. I looked at the utube videos and all the photos that I can, but mine doesn't look like theirs. Everybody else has a nice flat screen over the flywheel. Mine has a smooth shaft sticking up about one inch. I'm attaching photos.
When I bought this thing, it had a pull starter over the shaft, but, of course it wouldn't do anything. I was thinking maybe I can cut a keyway into it and put a pulley on it to run various things. Or maybe I can put a pull starter on it. Seems a shame to have an engine like this only for cutting grass.

Have you checked here ?? That is different looking, whats it look like with the shroud removed ??
Those plastic pinion gears are just about everywhere. I think even Tractor Supply has them for ~$7. I'll go ahead and buy one to put on the shelf. There is a utube video explaining how to change it. I need a long drift pin, but I think I can get one those a harbor freight or something.
Nothing odd about it. He said it did have a recoil starter on it. He has remove part of it. On the rare occasion I have done that I sawed the crankshaft extension off and replaced the recoil starter hub with a nut, adapter and a solid screen. Actually that may be new enough that the extension will screw out instead of being one pc.

PS: Yeah, IPL says the extension screws out/in. I can send you a Service (overhaul) Manual for the engine IF you like, address below, put in proper format and remind me engine model number and what you want.
