no ignition

I have a murry riding mower someone gave me.he said mice got into the ignition .anyway the ignition is laying by the engine and he said it will start if I jump the solenoid.im not worried about the lights.im worried if this works will it still charge?the wires to the battery,solinoid and starter are still connected.but I have no key

sounds like you could have a bad ignition switch bad solenoid or the wire from the switch to the solenoid is bad check for voltage at the solenoid with a test light when turing the key to start position if you have voltage there then check the voltage at the starter side of the solenoid with the key in the start position if no voltage there then you have a bad solenoid if you dont have voltage at the switch side then you have a bad wire or switch also check all your grounds and safety switches and yes even if you jump the solenoid it should charge the battery good luck

the ignition isn't any good plus I don't have a key.im trying to figure out how to do a simple push button start setup.the guy that gave it to me said it will start if I do it off the solenoid and if it does then I want to use a push button but don't no how

The push button is easy hot wire from battery or wherever to the push button then run a wire to the solenoid, unhook factory wire, plug yours on with a spade connector.
You also need to make sure you got power to the fuel solenoid on the bottom of the bowl.
Once you get it running just check voltage at the battery, running 14.5ish volts and not 12.5 -13 volts.
