Hello.
My name is Jeff Wathen. I live my wife and our teenage son in rural Ray county Missouri.
We mow our yard and my mother-in-laws yard for a total of@ 3 acres.
We purchased our Scotts 2554 mower 10 years ago, used with 25 hours on it. Only had one major problem, it started smoking and burning oil at @125 hours. I pulled the engine off, replaced all the rings and one exhaust valve.
I did a major rebuild on the mower deck last year.
I like it because if I choose I can order parts online from JD and pick them up at the dealer. Or I can get some maintenance items at the local mower shop.
The first thing I did was an oil/filter change. I was amazed that the oil drain pipe was on the right side of the mower and the filter was on the left. So I got creative and relocated the drain to the other side of the mower. It was a simple matter of moving a pipe plug and a little massage to the frame.
I use an AC-Delco PF53 oil filter, there is no reason to spend the extra cash(double) for a "genuine" filter.
I did try to use Gates automotive v-belts, the mower belt only lasted 10 hours. All the belts are now JD.
Our mower now has @560 hours on it, my wife and my teenage son mow with it with no issues.
Thanks in advance for information, I have been very impressed with transmission posts.
Lots of good information here.
