On the Craftsman LT1000 I have an 18 hp B&S Intek engine. I'm wondering how in the world the air filter keeps dust out of the engine with that gaping hole in the filter over the throat of the carb.

If the airbox is not sealed up tightly, how can this keep dust particles from being drawn in ? Oh yeah, the filter # is 698083.

The air is drawn in from under the blower housing where the air filter sits, up through the filter and then into the carb. If you take the filter out is will be easier to understand.

ILENGINE answered the question exactly right. I just want to add something though. This is a newer mower with a lot of plastic incorporated into it. Plastic is what the whole air filter assembly is made out of. There is nothing wrong with these engines at first when they are new, but over time the plastic in that filter assembly will begin to warp. This means that there will no longer be a good seal between the filter and housing it is in and debris may be allowed in. It will be allowed in past the filter and directly into the carb witch can cause issues with performance. You may want to watch this video be lynolsoffice on youtube. He explains this well in his video: Wizard tractor gets a 26hp V-Twin Briggs & Stratton motor - YouTube. Hope I've added something useful and maybe you will learn something new.

Thanks guys -

That's what brought about the question. I got mine used, it's a 2006 and at some point in the past the plastic airbox cover that clamps down had been laid on the exhaust. It melted a hole in it and warped the cover.

I found the replacement part online but wondered if there wasn't a better system, like a filter that would clamp or bolt directly onto the carb. I like the idea of the AC foam filter they mention in the video but will try to find a better solution. If you know of any, please feel free to point me in the right direction.

Thanks,

Kevin
