10 hours is what my dealer told me for the first oil change and that is what I did. As far as I know, you can switch to synthetic at that time as the rings should be seated by then. I'm sure an real expert will set this straight as I'm an amateur and only wrench on fairly simple things for myself.

I just bought the same mower last week, it is awesome!
I haven't been able to find anything in writing on the initial oil change, but 8-10hrs seems typical with other brands. I should be in that range after mowing this weekend, and plan to use a 10W-30.
Kohler recommends not changing to synthetic until at least 50 hrs.

Yep, sounds about right.
The break-in oil change is always important because it's normal for some small metal bits to remain inside the engine due to manufacturing. This oil change will usually remove all of those little bits, if any, and ensure your motor runs tip-top form then on out.
