Hi,
I am retired and own a Honda 215HXA I purchased in 1995. It has been the best mower ever. Recently I accidentally ran over a stump root while mowing. That resulted in a bent crank and possibe other damage.

I had searched for a replacement engine for it and found a suggestion of a Harbor Freight Preditor of a similar size. Does anyone know how compatible this would be for my Honda. I am on a limited budget without a lot or room for extra expense to make repairs to the mower.

Some discussion time to time on the H Frt engines. No real feedback I can recall about reliability. If you go the H Frt route look at the warranty which is supposed to be good. IMO you will not get Honda with such an engine. ( I do not own a Honda, just impression)

The engine in your HR215HXA has a PTO shaft design that delivers power to the transmission. I'm not aware of any non-Honda engines that are configured this way; thus, while you could drop in a non-Honda engine, a lack of a PTO shaft means no more self-propel.

Honda still offers a correct replacement engine, but it's costly, about $471 list price for the engine, labor extra.

You may want to have a good Honda dealer examine the mower and provide an estimate to repair the engine, it can likely be repaired for less than the cost of a new engine.

Plan "C" might be to find a good used Honda mower for sale. If you have been pleased with your HR215, I'd suggest shopping for an HRX217HX; it cuts even nicer, and still has the smooth hydrostatic drive.
