New B&S Engine Will Not Cold Start When Choked - Only Starts in Run Position

I have never encountered this issue with any small engine.

A brand new lawn tractor with a brand new Briggs and Stratton Model 331877 21HP engine (with conventional choke), will not start with the throttle in the Choke position. However, after cranking with no start in the Choke position, moving the throttle to RUN (fast speed) results in the engine starting immediately. (This was from the very first start, and each of the starts since (tractor is only 3 days old).

Once the engine has run for even a minute or less, it will restart fine in either the Choke or Run throttle positions.

I also tried "choking" twice before cranking, but no start... Move throttle to Run fast, and it fires right up (with large cloud of white smoke).

Yesterday, I checked to verify that the throttle cable was operating properly, and that when it reached the detent position for Choke closure, I verified that it did rotate the plastic choke lever on top of the carb. I didn't try starting the engine after playing with the throttle around 4-5 times to verify cable operation, but funny thing was that several hours later I placed the throttle in Choke and it started for the first time (and only time) when COLD starting in the Choke position.

This morning, cold engine, back to no start when choked, and starting quickly in Run (fast speed) position.

I can't figure out what is going on, and would really appreciate explanations and assistance. Thanks.

This is something you need not be concerned about. The choke only "assists" in starting WHEN NEEDED. It is not a mandatory process when starting. If you don't need it,, don't worry about it as long as it runs good.

Thanks very much for taking the time to respond.
