I was replacing the carburator on my riding mower that has 17.5 Briggs & Stratton intek engine. I must have tighten the carb studs just a hair too much. Now I have a vacumm leak causing the mower to surge off and on. I was going to use a helicoil kit to tap two clean holes for the studs. As i look closer at the Carb stud, the end that attached to the manifold....I don't recogonize what kind of thread it is. It is like a wide thread found on wood screws. see attached pic or a picture of this part via this link Carb Stud for Briggs and Stratton 31R977-0027-G1 engine. So I don't know if I need a different type of helicoil and or need to take a different approach. Looking any guidance or suggestions. Thank you for looking.

They are self tapping Plastite screw threads. Either get a new (used) intake manifold or new screws with machine threads. I would to do looking around here to see if I engine present that has the older machine screws in order to find the part number.

To confirm if I go down the machine theads option. I would find similar size studs (lenght and diameter) that have machine threads and then use the helicoil on the manifold?

Stud with machine threads (1/4-20) PN 690227.

Don't know it Helicoils would work or not, never tried them in plastic. Always used inserts for plastic on other equipment. The intake manifold has flange threaded inserts for the machine screws.

The intake manifold would be 591248 with metal inserts or 592842 for Plastite screws.

Plenty of blown engines out there with these parts.

In a pinch I have used a couple pieces of zip tie in each stripped hole and then thread the studs in. Worked great till i could get customer a new manifold.

Just for info.....Loctite has come out with an epoxy for all plastics. This stuff really works.
