We recently moved to West Tennessee and have a rather large (5 acres) lot that is mostly grass. This is the first time I have ever owned a lawn so large, and so I bought a used Husqvarna 54" zero turn.

I mowed the front lawn yesterday (took about 3 hours) and it left huge rows of grass clippings. How do you handle that with a Zero Turn? Do most folks leave them on the yard, or use some sort of bagging system?

Do the bagger attachments work well enough on a zero turn?

I mow about 3 acres ,had hip surgery in June so wasn't able to mow for a month and my lawn looked what you describe after mowing.I just left it ,the clippings broke down and when I mowed again you could'nt tell. Those baggers would'nt cut it on my place, too many trees and other things for one to get hung up on..russ

It will take you twice as long but when your grass gets to high you will not have as much clippings if you first cut it high then lower your deck and go over it again. The second cutting will also chew up some of the clippings from the first cut. Trac-Vac makes grass catchers for a zero-turn if you want to catch the clippings but that is extra work also!

I don't have nearly as much to mow but I have taken to mowing sections in a (ever-tightening rectangular) way to end up with a single row of clippings in each section. Then I can mow over that row/pile a couple times and it mulches it up pretty good. I have a pull behind lawn sweeper I picked up 2nd hand and some times i run that over these single row piles. Sweeper is great but doesn't hold enough to suit me. Maybe some modifications are in order. Hope this helps.

Something that may help with your clipping problem is to switch out the blades you're using now to Gator Blades. Gator blades will cut your grass into finer or smaller pieces. Smaller clippings mean less grass laying on top of your lawn. Smaller clippings will also break down into fertilizer http://www.squidoo.com/gator-mower-blades#much quicker amounting to about 25% of your fertilizing needs.
