So Im getting ready to do first start of the season.
My battery was dead.
To make a long story short the BLADES WILL ENGAGE WITH JUMPER CABLES.
When I remove the cables the blades wont engage but the motor still runs.
any suggestions?
Oh its a John Deere LA140 riding lawn mower

When you remove the jumper cables the battery has less then 12v and that in turn shuts down the charging system to the regulator because it has to have 12 volts to operate. No voltage means no electric PTO clutch.
Replace your battery.Running with a stone dead battery is bad for the electrical system.Once youve replaced it,throw a voltmeter on the battery to ensure the charging system is working you should see 13.6-14.5VDC with the rpms up ,on a good battery thats at or near full charge...
