John Deere l118. Wasn’t in the best condition. Changed blades, fuel/air filters, spark plugs and new belt. I still need the a new battery(current one works with a jump). Got it to start up after replacing everything on first jump. It bogged out once I turned the blades on. Now when I try to jump it and the deck is up the blades try to spin. If the deck is down they won’t spin(I don’t think).

What would be the cause of this/any of my problems?

Also should note I’m not the most knowledgeable when it comes to things like this.

About the blades spinning: The belt may be too tight. If you still have the old belt, try putting that one on and see if the blades turn without having the pto engaged. When you raise and lower the deck you are changing the angle from the driveshaft pulley to the deck pulleys and making the belt more or less slack. About the bogging down: Do you have the throttle at full power when you engage the blades? If so, maybe you need to adjust the governor to the specs for your engine. You’ll need a tachometer for that.

Hello PL9,

Likely the wrong belt, especially if you got it at a local hardware store. Even online is a gamble these days unless you go through Parts tree or Pro Parts Direct.

Don't mess with the engine governor if you do not know what you are doing on these engines. I can cause other more severe problems.
