Need Help with Briggs 6.5 Intek

I just picked up an older craftsman with this engine for free, as the guy was having some problems with it. He was really just not able to get it started, as the engine became impossible to turn over by the pull start. I asked him if he had hit anything, and he said no. Also there is no sign that the crankshaft is bent. The engine does turn over easily by spinning the blade (with the plug boot removed, of course) and it seems to have good compression. While doing this, there is an odd gurgling sound coming from the air filter area, where there does seem to be some fluid stained on the bottom of the air filter cover. I have done no tear-down yet, so this is just what I see and feel from spending a couple of minutes with it. Any ideas? Thanks

It seems that you have a compression lock so take out the plug and crank the engine and see if any oil comes out.

Hey! It worked! I took off the plug, pulled the cord and a huge shot of oil spewed out. I did check the oil just before this and it was VERY high on the dipstick, which I suppose caused the problem for the guy in the first place. So now what need to be done? I imagine that draining the oil and possible getting a new spark plug would be a good idea, but what else? Thanks

Fog the mosquitoes while it burns the oil out of the muffler. Other than that you about covered it.

Okay I got the oil changed and a replacement spark plug. It fired up after awhile, but I haven't had it running much because I am afraid of the smoke and bothering my neighbors with it. Is there anything I can do to clean it out a bit to minimize the smoke?

Simple answer, NO. Just have a case of beer cold when they come over to complain.

Ha, that's funny. I actually switched the muffler with one from another intek I have. There was still smoke, but a lot less. I kind of liked the other muffler better, though, so I'll have to see what to do about that.
