Need help inspecting parts

Trying to figure out if rebuilding the engine is worthwhile. I don't do this often (2nd one) but my first one was in better shape yet worse running condition. The engine started leaking oil while mowing and it came from the sump area so while I had it opened I tore it apart to check everything.

So I need a new connecting rod it seems like.. quite a bit of scoring and can easily feel it. I doubt you can sand it because it would be larger and its impossible to sand perfectly. I think the crankshaft is ok but I was hoping someone could double check my assessment. It is possible to try to run some 1000 grit emory on it if needed?

Also the cylinder(cant really feel the scoring) and piston seem serviceable or do you recommend I hone it since its torn apart? Would have to figure out where to rent one or buy a cheap stone one.

Oh I almost forgot, thanks in advance for the help.

I would polish the crank with emory cloth, and replace the rod.

If anything, I would let a shop re-cut the valves and seats.
You can get more involved, but I wouldn't.

First thing you should do is start measuring to see how far out of specs the parts maybe. Personally I wouldn’t speed too much time on this engine. Rod is toast, piston and cylinder not much better, crank journal needs cleaning and valve seats may need cutting. Just a second opinion, cost will easily exceed expectations.

So I thought this would be salvageable because the valves and seats seem fine. I have the gaskets already. Stupidly ordered before I tore it apart since I caught the leak early and thought minor to no damage. Either way if all I end up ordering is a connecting rod I can get a used one in good shape for cheap and it will run for a while then great.

It was just my opinion. Remember I have had to teach students how to help customers make good decisions, because we charge customers for their decisions.

Looks to me like a victim of today's oil quality, just not right for air cooled engines. I'm with Rivets here, not really worth any real investment. If you can find a new rod on Ebay for 6 or 8 dollars (they are out there) , slap it together with the new gaskets and run it 'till it dies totally.

Funny I can find an ebay rod for 17 and a rod and piston in good condition for 20. Add in a new valve seal ($10). I am sitting at 30 already. Emory paper the crankshaft, lap the valves and throw it back together think I will get a few years out of this or just grab a new engine (or used) or a new mower. The labor is free because its a way to keep my sanity locked inside a house lol.

Just figure if I can get a few seasons out of this great but if you are thinking on average not much life then screw it Ill start over.

How about a brand new motor? Small engine warehouse is liquidating some little motors, cheap. This one is going for $69 with a code on the purchase. Code 122m02-0134-e520 at check out. 7/8x 3 5/32 shaft. Complete engine. Check the specs though.
