Hey everyone im pulling my old Yard Machine back out and it has Briggs 17 hp single ohv engine. It burned a little oil before a belt put it into storage. I might rebuild the engine but i cant seem to find a engine rebuild kit for it. Its a 313707 0126 E1. Can anyone help me find the proper kit for it.
The airfilter was bad so its going to get replaced. I usually check it after each use and add a little but it doesn't blow huge amounts of smoke but even with fresh oil i can see a little smoke while cutting.
all engines burn a little oil. Briggs even puts a specification in their repair manuals (at least they used to). if it is no more than an ounce or 2, i would leave it. Run it till it dies. if it is really bad, you can rebuild it. There are no rebuild kits with everything you need. at the minimum, a gasket kit with seals and new rings. however, everyhting should be mic'd out and compared to the service manual for wear. check the cylinder on the thrust side as well as non-thurst side, check in 3 spots each (top, middle, bottom). you are checking for out of round and for barrel shape. check the con-rod for wear at both ends. may have to do an undersize rod. check crankshaft for wear. check valves etc. also check the head for warpage. easiest way to do this is use a fine piece of sandpaper on a flat surface and lap the head. if there are high spots, it will show.
Thanks for the info. That explains why i havent found any kits. Although i dont know the history of the engine, it was used and not original. I think atleast it might be rings wearing because of the the age. But if i do decide to open it ill make sure to check everything. We had it setup for the newer airfilter shroud and jury rigged the breather tube so that probably didnt help. Im in the process of ordering the proper airfilter base, manifold, breather, and the belt it need before being put away.
