My Poulan riding mower will not start.

So 3 days ago I was mowing my grass an my mower ran out of gas. I pushed it to the driveway and called it a night. The next day I went out an put had in it and now it won't start. The motor does like 3 cranks and then seizes. There's a hole in the engine cover over the carb and it rained that night so I'm thinking water probably got into the carburetor. Does anybody have any ideas?

Remove air filter and spark plugs, inspect, clean or replace if you find water in air filter housing, remove water with clean shop rag. Inspect spark plugs for carbon buildup, remove carbon deposits, check gap on plugs, reinstall or replace if you find plugs are bad. Same goes for air filter, if it is water logged or dirty replace it.

Would this cause the engine to not completely crank?

Rivets

Pull the dipstick and check the oil level also. I would also remove the spark plugs and see if the engine spins over with no plugs in.
