I can't figure out what is wrong, it's a Murray wide body mower. The sound comes from the engine. It's a Briggs & Stratton engine. I would like to take it apart and replace whatever part is making the sound. It's pretty embarrassing to say the least. It stops when I drop the blades though. I'm in the process of buying another part (for the deck) and would like to get them both at the same time. Thanks for your time y'all
I wonder if the blade engagement lever adjustment is set too tight and the belt is making the squeeling sound on the engine pulley.

hmm... the part i'm ordering soon is the jackshaft spindle housing because it broke - before that broke, under the deck sounded like a bucket of bolts rolling around. i guess i'll just replace that first then start it up again and see if the sound has disappeared. it does sound like it's in the engine though but doesn't happen when the blade is dropped so .. you're most likely right. I hope! it will save me some money. parts are expensive
Is there a way to check all the pulleys before I put the deck back together? I'd hate to have to take the deck off again.
Also, What type of maintenance should I do on my mower, besides checking the oil and cleaning out the filter? I really want to get the thing back in tip top shape - the next thing on my list is to change the blades, they look rough. But other than that, I really have no idea. Thanks again for all your help.

Yes, with the belts off, spin each pulley/blade etc... If you can hear it spin/roar, it is on the way out!!!!
