I have a Murray 5725 lawnmower with the 8hp Tecumseh TVM195-150269E engine. Had a compression issue and now i am trying to check the valves out. Took the valve cover off and removed the breather element and breather body and am now looking at another cover of some kind with a tab looking thing attached. Not sure what this is since it does not appear to show up on the engine diagram. Don't want to break it but don't really see how to remove it. Any help would be appreciated.

I think that thing you are talking about is the breather reed valve. The whole assembly that the reed is attached to comes out. Starting from the outside, you have the cover with a gasket and the breather filter media, then behind that is the reed assy plate, which is the same size as the outside cover that you removed, which comes out and has another gasket behind it.

I am wondering what the purpose of the reed valve is. Is it an EGR function only or does it affect the running of the engine?

It maintains a vacuum in the crankcase, which keeps helps to keep the oil inside the engine.
