Mulching Scag

I have a 3 year old Scag Freedom Z with a 52 inch cut. I want to convert to be able to mulch. Scag offers a plate that covers the discharge chute. Also available is a kit that includes 3 mulching blades and the afore said plate. Has anyone done this and what were your results? This is not a cheap venture. Thanks.

I have a 48" freedom z with a qwikchute blocker, the hoover baffle kit and I run the regular standard lift blades. That combo works perfect for me mulching leaves, and I haven't had any complaints from any of the lawns I take care of.

So are you saying you didn't need the so called Scag mulching blades? Thanks for the response.

Do not convert it to permanent mulching with new baffles and block off plate. You will not be happy.

I am guessing, Tiger, we are talking about constant clogging of the discharge? I am curious.

The quality of cut will suffer greatly. Clumps of grass left behind, etc. Harder on the engine also. When mowing grass, the whole idea is to let the cut grass fly out and disperse as much as possible.

And you will have to mow more often as you got to keep the grass shorter and clean deck underside quite a bit.

Thanks to all for responding. To get other folks experiences is invaluable. Merry Christmas!

Nope, I run the regular lift blades all the time.
