MTD/Statesman 690-699 series Battery drain

I am getting 9.6vdc with the key in the off position between the negative cable and the battery. Has anyone had this? Where is the first place to look for the drain on the battery? I can do wire by wire but thought someone might have alteady had this issue and can steer mo to the right wire the first time. Thanks.
