what possibly could cause a MTD riding mower to cut off when blade is engaged?

Most likely cause is a seat switch problem or something in the wiring associated with the seat switch. it may kill the engine if there is also a problem with the reverse safety switch.

I had been cutting the grass for awhile when it cut off. As soon as I lifted the blade it would start back up. I could move with it but as soon as I lower the blade it would cough and cut off.

the seat switch is two small bent pieces of metal that get pushed together to kill the engine, Try unplugging those to clips and see what happens. the reverse swtich looks like the seat switch down around the rod attached to the bottom of the shift lever, but only has one tab and one wire. Try the same with it. If that doesn't fix it then start checking the wires for bare spots.

a short, or faulty clutch switch could also be your problem, but not as likely, unless the cause is before the switch. in the wiring harness.
