hi, i have a mtd riding mower. recently changed all 3 belts, 2 mows later the deck belt broke. i got a new belt put it on, engaged the blade for about a minute, shut it off and checked it. no sign of wear. started it again and while in nuetral with the deck disengages, i let it idle for about five minutes. while doing this i notice the deck belt moving ever so slightly. i shut it of lowered the deck to inspect and found the the belt area that was around the front pulley was hot and the pulley itself was extremely hot. any ideas? it is a 17.5 hp 42inch deck shift on the go yard machine model #13bn682g129

By front pulley do you mean the engine pulley? If the deck belt broke I would check and make sure the new belt is properly routed within the belt guides and that there are no pulleys getting in a bind. Good luck!

i guess i mean engine pulley. the deck belt is a basic triangle shape, goes around each blade and to a front pulley just behind the front wheels. above that is the drive belt that runs front to back. so technically two pulleys on the same shaft

One other thing to consider in regards to your pulleys. Sometimes a pulley can become excessively worn and the belt will no longer ride in the groove but can become stuck in it which can cause a belt to snap. If you release the tension off the belt (by whatever method based on your model mower), you should be able to manually pull the belt and it should turn freely on the pulleys. If it binds on one, that is most likely where your problem is. Good luck!!
