I have an Mtd E/130. The model with the raised transmission which drives the rear wheels with chain drive.
The mower started to clunk, clunk , clunk when in gear, and particularly under strain... This got worse and worse, until it would not stay in forward drive.
I opened the chain drives which look fine, and regreased. then opened the transaxle. The only noticeable issue to the eye, ws wear on the clutch collar, so replaced it with a new one, and put everything back together.
I still have the same problem, the clunk, clunk and popping out of gear. The clunking is only in when the mower is in motion ( i.e not when jacked up and turning in gear and thus not under strain) Because of this its difficult to pinpoint the source of the clunk, sounds like transmission case or right hand chain/axle.
Please help... I'm at a total loss
