MTD-DYNAMARK-NOMA OVHXL 12 hp. valve lash setting .004" ? - risk if burning valves ?

Dear List:
We were wondering as we read the recommended settings and factory manual valve lash recommendations.
1985 mower:
MTD-DYNAMARK-NOMA OVHXL 12 hp. valve lash setting of .004" ? - a risk if burning valves ?

We set them to .006-.008" due to reading some tech recommendations by prof mechanics in the industry, as a safe guard. I wanted to eliminate any hard starting and keep the valve train in tact, especailly when the engine was hot.

Thanks,

http://www.smallenginesuppliers.com/html/engine-specs/tecumseh/Tecumseh_quick_reference.pdf If your manual says .004 cold engine, then I would adjust valves to .004. When you waver from engine manufacturers specs., you will soon have engine problems internally. When posting it would be a big help if you include model number, engine manufacturer, as well as all numbers from engine and any other numbers you can find, Thanks.

Yeah, well you obviously are talking about a Tecumseh engine, so you should set the gaps to their specs.... If you increase the gap, you will make for harder cranking conditions...
