My MTD 1986 11HP-38" flat hd lawn tractor hard to turn over with fully charged battery, (also tryed jumping), replaced Safety switches (Clutch/Brk), Blade, rebuilt starter assy., also hand pull rope start rig on top of pulley very hard to pull, also have spark, also spins like hell with plug out. But when turning key it turns over slightly and nothing?

At my limit anyone got the right fix.

Ran great until the brake disc fell off and disengaging the blades would not work. I replaced my a deck brg assy on one side.

Adjust valves per manual specs., post all numbers from engine, model xxxxxx, type xxxx, code xx.

Rotate top of engine clockwise by hand past hard spot & see if it will start with key.

Results engine manual

https://www.briggsandstratton.com/u...-manuals/single-cylinder-l-head-repair-manual In case you're interested, covers everything your engine, good deal.

By adjusting valves properly, this will enable compression release on camshaft to work properly.

I tryed the "turn engine clockwise to the hard spot and just over and it started after a few good turn overs (which it was not doing before) and it started. Hallayouya! ThankYou..I do not understand what happened, but it worked.

The only thing I noticed after it ran a short while... I got what I have been having for 5-7 yrs...it sounds like the blades start to slightly engage and I can smell either the belt (it is new) or a steel smell and a horrible scaping sound.

Chk'd belt and looks okay and I am going to chk the disk brake which may be hitting the center nut instead of just the disk???

I have ran this rider with blades engaged always due to this problem. It disengages the blades just enough (when I pull back the control arm disengager to get the rider into my shed without the blades running. But if I leave it running the noise starts and seems that the blades are turning slightly????

Any ideas on why the blades seem to engage when it is set for disengagement, and has a new safety switch?

I am glad I found this site and your answer to my first problem.

If the belts were ever replaced with non original equipment belts that often causes a problem on MTD mowers.

I got my rider (Agway ala MTD) to run with blades always engaged. Starting when lever is disengaged it will disengage them enough to start it and disengage enough to drive up my small ramp into the shed but if I just leave them disengaged after maybe a minute or less belt smokes and horrible sound that I originally had (for 5-7 yrs) before I replaced a deck brg assy.

I looked at the belt keepers on the deck to see if they are scraping the belt and seem fine and the belt is a Lowes MTD belt Replaces OE # 754-0329A, 954-0329A, 754-0329, and 954-0329 for 600 series rider with deep deck.

At least it will cut the grass.
