Cutting height of grass depends on your location and the type of grass you are cutting. St.Augustine, Bahia, Bermuda etc all have different cutting heights.

Warm-season grasses like Bermuda, Zoysia and Centipede grass are usually better cut short, 1 to 2 inch range depending on the variety and with a reel mower not a rotary.
St. Augustine grass should be cut higher, between 3 1/2 and 4 inches, preferably 3 3/4 inches.
A cool-season grass such as Fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass, are usually best cut higher generally in the 2 to 3 inch range.

The thing if this is your business and you think your guys are cutting to short just tell them the height you want your lawns cut and if they don't do what you want tell them to hit the road.

Yea family's a hard one alright. I had to tell my son that it's done my way or the Highway and he took the road. I've always been a firm believer in doing the job right and if a person is capable of doing that and just refuses to do it, it just tells me that the individual isn't happy doing the job and he needs to find something he is happy with so he can do a good job. Being happy with your job can make all the difference in the world in someone's performance.
