Mouse nest in JD D-130

Hi all,

Just got my John Deere D-130 out of the shed after winter. Found a mouse nest in the motor which I cleaned out.

However, my motor won't crank. The battery is fine and the starter spins... but the engine doesn't even try to crank. Most posts I've read seem to point at the Solenoid, but me, not being very mechanically inclined, can't understand that if the solenoid doesn't work, then why is my starting spinning and spinning?

check the wire going to the fuel solenoid. The thing on the carburetor with a wire attached to it.

Easy way to prevent mouse nests... during your storage period, put a handful size of MOTHBALLS in a discarded plastic container with a SCREW-on lid ... like from spices ..punch or drill some small size holes in it and store on or near your mowers engine... you can also cover it with a large trash bag... this type of container keeps your pets away but curious kids may require other measures !!

All great replies. I did a little more testing and see the starter gear spins, but does not move up the engage the motor gear. Is this something I can fix????

Either the starter gear is stuck on the worm drive in the lower position and you may need to move things around to free it up. Just don't use penetrating oils, and such on the kohler starter because they use a rubber friction drive that will slip if it get lube on it when you try to crank the engine. Also make sure you didn't hook the battery up backwards, Some starters will spin in reverse, and will show the same symptoms you are having.
