I am looking to buy a 2010 Ariens riding mower. It is Manual transmission gears reverse and 1st thru 4th work fine. 5th and 6th do nothing when you put them in these gears. I am wondering if it's a good buy becuase I don't really need 5 and 6 gears or could that mean others are going out or the transmission is bad? My questions are could it last many years without worry about the rest of the gears? Does having 5 and 6 gear not working effect the other gears The mower comes with bags for 350 dollars and the bags alone cost 299.00. Please help me decide. Thanks

With out numbers it is very difficult to say what's wrong and answer your question. I can say that most units have a 2 year warranty. I would get the model and serial numbers and take them to an Ariens dealer to see if the unit is still covered. You just might be able to get it repaired without any extra cost to you.

I asked the seller and it is out of warranty so it's as it. I am wondering though if just because gears 5 and 6 don't work will the other gears work just fine. It does run great and the gears go thru 1-4 fine.

I wouldn't take his word for it. I would still get the numbers and check it out. Your local dealer can find out the exact date it was purchased. It may be just a couple of months and Ariens might cover the repairs. What do you have to loose but a little time and some legwork?

Ok I will thanks. If it isn't under warranty would u think the other gears r ok?

Again without numbers it is difficult to say. I don't know what type of transmission is in the unit. There are many types of six speeds. It could be as simple as being out of adjustment, which should only cost about $50 to repair or bad internal parts which could cost up to $500. Is it worth the gamble? Only you can make that decision. To me I would gamble, but that is because I can tear them down and put them back together. It would just cost me the parts. A good mechanic should be able to do it in about four to five hours of labor. If your labor rates are between $65-85 per hour you can do the math. Again this is just a guess and my opinion as I have no numbers and many on this forum view me as a wrench monkey and feel I am not a professional who give narrow advise.
