I have an LX 277 that will mow fine one minute and begin revving up and down and mow irregular the next. It only runs like this when the deck is engaged. Any thoughts on where to start?

When the engine starts to surge, are you able to get it to smooth out by applying the choke? If so, you may have debris in the carburetor rolling around and getting drawn up into one of the jets inside the carburetor.
To be honest I never tried that. It was undersized for my lawn so I purchased a zero turn and took the mower deck off to rework it a bit and am just getting it back together now. I will try that once it is assembled again.
