Lubricate transmission on walk behind?

Do transmissions on typical walk behind, self-propelled mowers require opening the case & lubricating or maintenance after only a few years of light use?
What's the longest lasting grease? I've never opened one of these - not sure how difficult it is (I've repaired, rebuilt many auto & small engines).

A Troybilt self-propelled, walk behind mower - about 21" - 22."
Rear wheel drive "transmission box" (no belts).
Has 4 speeds - selector lever.
Maybe 4 yrs old now, very minimal use & treated gently.

The 1st few years, with engine OFF, to push, pull or turn the mower (a few feet or across the yard), the back drive wheels turned freely (engine off).

Now, after mowing, washing grass from underside, then storing in shed, the next time the rear wheels (transmission?) don't want to turn when 1st taken out of the shed. Basically locked - while engine's off. This just started.

But after starting & mowing a bit, the wheels free up, & will turn - after the engine's off or drive is disengaged.

Also, last mowing - don't think selecting different speeds had much effect. It still propelled OK & speed selector lever moved freely, just didn't affect speed.
