247-289050 model. We neighbors are confused. We replaced a split transmission belt with the correct part number. Button up everything. Owner fired up mower and let the clutch out slowly. The mower did a massive wheel stand and took off to discover no brakes. Mower did not have this trouble before. What have we done wrong?

I suspect that a linkage got unhooks and then rehooked to the wrong place. That is a hydrostat mower with a fender controlled speed control, s o the belt should have no effect on the drive even if it was incorrect. From the diagrams it appears the belt is constant tension not controlled by the pedal. The pedal controls the brake only. So the issue is with the speed control linkage connected to the fender control or something that is keeping the hydro from returning to neutral flow position.

IL, look again I finding a declutching rod #40 and return spring #28. But even as you said the Hydro should go to neutral if placed in the neutral position.

The diagram just gives the illusion that 40 connects to 53 and looks like 28 goes between 40 and 10
