My, new to me, LT 1042 Kohler valve cover gasket (I hope) is leaking. From what I've seen/heard it's a common problem. Would putting a gasket sealant on the gasket or just using an automotive gasket maker like Permatex work better?

Both ways would work but two things I would recommend. I would purchase a new gasket and make sure that the cover is not bent, causing the leak. If you want to use a form a gasket type of product, with or without the gasket, make sure that you select one that is removable.

If I remember correctly some of the courage engines have a gasket and some don't. the ones that have the gasket, it used to be a cork type material.
