Lt 1000 not running

I have a Craftsman Lt1000 with a 15.5 B&S ohv. The other day when I was mowing some heavier stuff I got hung up. When I was hung up and the tractor still running I could not get it to go into or out of gear. I hopped off and when I did the kill switch in the seat killed the engine. (I think it backfired as it died).

I have not been able to get it to restart since then. The engine turns, but, does not fire. If I give it a shot of ether it back fires.

From what I have read backfiring is generally symptomatic of a broken key. However, I need to give it ether to get a backfire. Is it possible that it is so far out of time that the raw the fuel had been exhausted before before ignition?

Any guesses on the not starting? I am pretty sure that the drive belt slipped and that's why it won't go into gear.

Where can I get a schematic of this engine to see how it breaks down and where the key is?

Thanks,
sam

i have alot of questions here....did you get hung up in branches or barbed wire or what?.....have you checked the basics?...like your air filter and spark.... can you take pictures of the undercarriage and motor?...that would help

I got hung up on a dirt mound with branches and small dried bamboo like growth.

Drive belt looks loose, but, I can't really tell.

It backfires so I suspect spark is okay. I have not checked air filter, but, hours are very low.

I will dig deeper and repost. If anyone can point me to some picture opf how the plastic stuff comes off to access flywheel key that would be great. Do I need to pull the FW?

your belt will be loose when the clutch is in and tight released.......first check the 2 pulleys coming off the motor......are they bent or damaged?...also the belts.....check the the entirety of them for any damage:smile:

If you were mowing in dusty conditions, theres a very good chance that it's your airfilter.
However, if the mower is stuck in gear, it wont start, and that could be your problem.
As for it being stuck in gear, perhaps something got bent? Is it a hydro or a gear transmition?
