I have a Simplicity lawn tractor with 20HP Vanguard engine, about 10-11 years old. I've had it for two years and it has ran fine without any strange noises. I just did my first oil change since I've owned it, and this new noise has appeared at startup, lasts for a few seconds, and then goes away. It sounds like valve train noise, but louder than I would expect. Seems like a dry start, but I chose an oil filter with an anti-drain back valve. I used Motorcraft FL-910S which has anti drainback. I used a reputable 5W-30 oil. What things could I check? I threw away the old filter before I noticed this problem, so I can't swap that back on as a check.. wish I could. I noticed it was also an automotive style filter (not Briggs), but not Motorcraft, and I don't recall the brand.

I have a 2010 Simplicity Broadmoor with 20 h.p. Vanguard that I purchased new from dealer. Do yourself a favor & use B&S OEM parts like oil filter, etc. I read Operators Manual, Service Manual, & Engine Manual back in 2010. Engine Manual recommends using 5W-30 Full Synthetic oil in engine, 48 oz's with filter change. Adjust valves, engine cold, intake & exhaust valves .004-.006. Check pre-filter & air filter often. I do use Valvoline 5w-30 full synthetic oil or Pennzoil full synthetic 5w-30 because they have been around over 100 yrs & are reputable, about $20 for 5 quarts. B&S 5w-30 full synthetic is $12-$13 per quart.Let us know how it goes, thanks, Mark
