Loud Noise - Briggs and Stratton - Help

Hey guys,

Just joined, wanted to pick your brain regarding a loud noise on my Cub Cadet mower with a Briggs and Stratton 344cc engine. This mower is ungodly loud, loudest mower I have ever owned, even compared to a few commercial zero turns.

Its a very loud tingy noise coming from the muffler side.

Is anyone else having this issue with your mower, is this standard?

If not, what do you guys think this is? I was going to replace the muffler but figured before I wasted material and money, better to ask around and if there are any suggestions.

Thanks!

Scott

Sounds like your muffler is blown out. You can remove the muffler and see if it’s falling apart internally by shaking it or shine a light down the openings. Being you said it was louder than normal this would be the first thing to do. Inspect the gasket while your at it.

I took off the muffler today. The gaskets certainly look worn and I am going to order replacements (if i can find them). The muffler made no noise of loose parts, rust, etc, completely quiet when I shook it. I check the heat shield (or whatever that thin piece of metal around the motor was and its not hitting or vibrating off anything either.

Having a hard time finding any other videos of this motor running to be able to compare the noise its making and at the volume its making it.

Thanks!
