Can someone give the best fix to surging/hunting common Lawnboy 2 stroke engines. I've heard people enlarge the carburetor jets. What does this entail?

Thank you.

Before you start drilling jets, check some other things.

Surging can easily be a governing issue. Is the governor working properly? Is it surging under load or even when on paved ground like your driveway? Is the governor easily swiveling? I had to clean and lube the pivot point of mine where the wind vane meets the carb. Is the spring too loose or broken on the governor? Sometimes popping off the fuel line and cleaning the filter screen that is inserted in to the fuel inlet port helps. That screen clogs easily. While you are doing this, spray carb cleaner into that inlet port. Spray cleaner all over the outside of the carb and then penetrating oil once it's clean. Spray the inside of the carb with carb cleaner via the air intake port. Make sure the filter is clean as a whistle. Remove the filter and run the mower in an area where there will be no debris to suck into the carb while running. Does it surge then? Could be a fuel draw issue or mixture setting if it does. Make sure you are flowing fuel well and that the mixture setting is adjusted properly on the carb. Make sure the fuel vent hole in the gas cap is open and you are not creating a vacuum when running the engine. I'm assuming you have good spark from your ignition coil and a clean plug.

Also, make sure there is no carbon build up in the exhaust ports and that the muffler is clean. Have fresh fuel. Anything over 2 months and I won't use it, I don't care if they say 2 cycle has "stabilizer" in it. Gas degrades rapidly after a few months.

If none of these things made a difference, then you have to go deeper, but I'd try these first.
