lawnboy model 680541 self propelled 21" mower has no spark.

I have replaced the coil, gapped it at .01", checked the flywheel magnets for magnetism, and have tried with and without the kill wire connected. Any thoughts? I am stumped

I do not have a compression gauge, but it is one of the hardest mowers to pull the starter rope that I have ever used. If the compression was low, would that prevent the spark plug from firing?

Yes you do.

Did you verify the sparkplug is sparking outside the engine? (Simple procedure) Can you see the spark? If you got a spark that way, you will get a spark with the plug in the cylinder, regardless of the compression of your particular engine.

Pulling the cord is a sign of compression. Pull on it gently and you will hear and feel the strokes and compression. If you pull quickly and the cord pulls you back, you should have good compression.
