I recently purchased a 8480 commercial rear bagger self propelled. The issue I am having is it will not free wheel backwards but works fine going forward. Is it time for a new transmission?I can purchase 2 side chute f engine models with the same toro trans but will it interchange or can I repair the transmission in it now?My research has shown me that rebuilding a trans like this is a PIA Is this kind of a rare lawnboy?I have not seen them around much

One person had a similar problem and it was the key that was the problem. The clerk sold him the wrong side as you need a left and right key to work properly.

yes I read that post.He had one wheel spinning the wrong direction. On mine that is not the case it moves forward just fine but will roll backwards as if something is dragging in the trans. Is there a grease zerk on it?I have not looked it over as it had a carb flooding issue which I must adress first I will check it tonight

this is what he said I have a 10521 rear wheel drive. can you tell me where to find a diagram of the pinion gear and the rest, I tried the reg diagrams but they don't show which directions the dots on the pinion gears go. I tried both ways, it will free wheel withot it running, when I start it ,it mowes fine but I can't back up while it running. his problem was the wrong key.

Looked it over last night when I cleaned the carb and tried to get it to rev up.the trans. is engaged all the time.Is this a cable adjustment? It has some goofy thing you push down on the handle to engage and let up to disengage.may need a new cable.will look at it tonight again. Also I much to my neighbors dismay cooked the muffler on my weber as is was a little carboned up but the ports looked fine. The more I look at this thing the more I like it.when I bought it the guy started it up and it ran with a plugged up muffler and a plug gap of maybe .010 and the carb flooding out due to a stuck float needle.it still runs kinda poorly but I dont give up.

oh plugged mufflers i got the best tip for that use an oil drain pan go to fleet farm or farm and fleet(cheapest) get a gallon or 2 of carb and parts cleaner looks like a paint can (i wait till it gets really dirty when im ready for a new clean gallon to soak my carbs in) i dump it in the oil drain pan and soak the muffler for a day and over night then i use my pressure washer and clean it off works so good use a champion cj14 plug and you can get float valve kits at your local mower store/toro dealer /ebay that solves the running issues now the trans may take alittle more effort

oh 1 other thing i forgot to mention the 8460 is an f engine from i think 86,87,88 or 89 but anyways the ignition coils burn out often it seems one time i got really confused and frusterated it would always start first pull then work great until you turn it off to pick up a stick... etc... then go to restart nothing wont start back up try then next day starts first pull again that is an ignition coil playing tricks with you
