I inherited my LB 10360C and it sat for a few years without gas conditioner. I tried cleaning the carb but it was too gummed up so I replaced it. I tuned it up with the advice from this site and it started with an easy 1/2 then 1 full pull of the starter cord. Yesterday I was cutting the grass after 1 full week of rain and the grass was quite high. I went in to a particularly thick area and when the engine started to strain, all of a sudden it started smoking like crazy. I tilted the front end up to see if improved but it didn't and just before I shut it down I could hear that awful sound of unlubed cylinders. What steps do I take to isolate and then fix the problem?

Sad to say this, but the engine may not be worth fixing, sounds like you broke a ring and scored the cylinder, or just broke an oil ring, nonetheless a teardown would probably be in order to find out exactly what broke.
