First question is : what is your budget?
Second question: what type of yard are you mowing (slope, flat, lots of trees, etc.)?

Answer both and we can further assist you in your decision.

I found out the term "lawn tractor" is significant compared to riding lawnmower. Ten years ago I should have bought a true lawn tractor which is supposed to have a more rugged chassis, better transmission with bigger shafts bigger wheels, and is able to pull small plows without damage. Cost difference (Craftsman-Husky) is about $1000-$1500. Next step to compact tractor is large $$.

Are you going to be just cutting grass or are you going to need something for snow removal also? Will you be hauling anything with it?

It is flat land with minimal rolling surface. the area is open the trees are on the outer edges of the clearing. as of now i will probably spend at least three seasons there with some time in late fall early winter for hunting so i will need to capabilities of attaching a plow or blower to this...I don't really want to go crazy with the cost but i am expecting 5 to ten grand if i can find something used....appreciate your help....

There folks on this forum that may not agree with me on this. Have you ever thought of a Gravely 8000 series tractor? You can a Gravely with a 48" snow dozer blade, 38", 44", 48" snowblower, 40" 50", 60", 72" mower deck (60",72" recommended twin cylinder engine) All powered attachments are shaft driven, decks, snow blowers, tillers, etc. They come with 12, 14, 16, HP single cylinder or 16, 17, 18, 20, 24 HP twin cylinder engines. 5.3 gallon fuel tanks, hydro or manual lift for the attachments. They come with a good strong trailer hitch. I bought a 8163-B with a 50" hydro lift deck 16 HP Briggs single cylinder engine for $700 about 2-3 months ago.View attachment 23586

I use mine to cut 4+ acres of grass, haul a hay wagon, haul wood out of the woods, plow snow, blow snow, till the garden. I have sickle bar mower and many more attachments. If you have 5 to 10 grand to spend on a garden tractor, you could spend $3,000 - $4,000 and get a very nice Gravely. Just a thought.
