L100 issues

Got a jd l100 5 speed with the 17.5hp briggs, won't start and backfires through the intake with the carb off, keyway was fine so I pulled the cover off to find a bent intake pushrod and broken rocker adjusters. I believe the valve guide is in its proper place so I'm at a loss as to what happened. Any advice would be appreciated Snapchat-1841276002.jpgSnapchat-1249198520.jpg

The guide is the proper height. And the adjusters broke because somebody tightened the set screw and then snugged the adjuster nut instead of using the adjuster to set the valve clearance and then tightening the set screw Will crack the adjuster nuts every time.

Think if I replace those along with the bent pushrod that should solve my issue?

Be a good starting point. Just remember to set the clearance with the adjuster nut and while holding in place snug the set screw..

Shot in the dark - Was this an overheated block by chance?

Are the cooling fins and all around the block, dead azz clean? As in like a new engine?
