Kohler Hydraulic Lifter Adjustment

I'm replacing the hydraulic lifters on a Kohler Aegis. The lifters are the same ones used in a small block Chevy. The lifter has .120" plunger travel and is designed to operate at about half that distance in pre-load adjustment (.060"). This gives the maximum range of give-and-take in the lifter's hydraulic system during operation. The Kohler service manual indicates an adjustment of .001 - .010" at the valve with the plunger bled down to the bottom of the lifter. That means pre-load is nearly bottomed or up to .006" off the bottom factoring in a 1.6 rocker ratio. Does anyone know why this extreme is used rather than adjusting for mid plunger distance pre-load?
