I have a craftsman mower with a kohler 17.5 command pro engine. It is a single cylinder. CV491-s
was running fine, and then just died. It started and ran on choke for about 30 to 45 seconds.
went through the basic steps of trouble shooting and sure enough no fuel flow to carb.
went to the output of the fuel pump, and no flow from the pump.
Bought and replaced the pump, after watching some videos on you tube. Looked fairly easy and pretty quick.
Still no fuel flow with the new pump.
Took the pump out. and put a fuel line from a gas can to te input of the pump. WIth the pump disconnected from the lawn mower, and holding it in my hand, I manually pumped the lever. After a few pumps, fuel was squirting out the exit of the pump.. Now I am confused as the pump works.
put my finger in the pump inlet and manually turned the engine and the suface of the cam seemed circular. This did not seem like it would pump the mechanism.
I disassembled my old pump so I could see the diaphram. I put iton the engine and manually turned the engine, and I could see the diaphram go in and out.
So at this point, I have the new pump on. and the fuel line disconnected. I have a gas can with some fuel and I connect that to the pump. WHen I hold the gas can high, I get fuel flowing out the outlet of the pump (gravity feed)
When I lower the gas can to about the level of the fuel tank on the lawn mower, fuel flow stops. However, when I crank the motor over, I still do not get fuel flowing at the outlet of the pump.
If I hold my finger over the outlet, I can feel air pulses like it is pumping, but now fuel.
Has anyone had this muc dificulty with this repair?
At this time, I have purchased a new fuel pump. THis time a kohler part. rather than a third party. The new pumps both look the same, but we will see if it works any better.
The only thing I observe is when I compare the original pump and the new pump, is that the bend in the arm is slightly different.
