At idle the engine slows down and picks up (surges). Full throttle there is an intermittent miss, and does not feel as strong as a 26hp twin should. If blades are engaged fuel spray coughs out the carburetor and it chugs down and dies. It will start back up, but repeats itself if tested under load.

Cleaned the carb twice, installed new plugs, comp tested, tested the coils for spark at cranking and at running speeds, all passed. However on the leak down test hot, I could hear a little bit of air escaping through the carb. There is no valve adjustment on these because it's a hydraulic lifter design.

This engine has the standard ignition. No DSAM system.

I have one doing the same thing and was told three times today that its a small plastic peice in the carb.It needs to be replaced cause the ethonal in the gas is eating them up. so i agree with the carb kit.

UPDATE: Installed a new carburetor and the mower ran great for about 15 minutes. Then bogged down and died, like it was out of gas.

After cleaning the fuel lines and checking the tank, I filled the carb bowl with fuel and refired the engine. It ran just fine until that fuel was used up. The fuel was not making the trip from the tank to the carb. I swapped a new fuel pump on, problem solved!!!

I wonder if this contributed to the original problem???
