Hello,
I am new to the forum. My interest is restoring 70's vintage Brick Top Lawn-Boy mowers.
Attached are pictures of my latest one.
We are using this for our "daily driver" while I am restoring the previous Brick Top mower that had been in service for over 10 years.

Hello All,
And thanks for the kind words on my 19" Lawn-boy restoration.
It is not a true restoration since the base is a model 5269F (1975-76) and the engine is an early D series with the 2 speed lever and uses 16:1 gas/oil ratio fuel.
So I am guessing the engine is from the late 60's or early 70's.

Are you serious about the "16 to 1" ?
With todays oils - I'd say twice that ..

Yes about the 16:1 ratio.... that is what Lawn-Boy said at the time.
The reason for this is because the C and early D series engines do not have needle bearings at the wrist pin/c-rod location....just a bushing.
I don't know if it matters, but they also have a 3 ring piston.

All of the later D series engines, have a needle bearing and a 2 ring piston. Lawn-Boy recommended 32:1 ratio for these.

In practice, I don't mix 16:1. I am usually in the range of 25:1 to 32:1.

Another oil option if you don't want to go with the old 16:1 mix would be to use something like "opti-2" universal 2 cycle mix.

I have used Opti-2 in my C's and early D's that originally called for 16:1 with great success.

Thanks for the oil suggestion and positive comments on the mower.
The engine on the mower in the pictures has a 3 ring piston.

I am working on another similar Lawn-Boy restoration.
It will have a newer Brick Top engine, but will be in a different color scheme.
I am in the process of stripping the paint on the deck and shroud for repainting.

Work has been very busy, so it is going to be a month or so until it is finished.
And I will post pictures when completed.
