Kawasaki or Briggs?

I am about to purchase a Ferris IS600Z 48" cut zero turn mower, but I'm not sure which engine to get. I have a choice between a Kawasaki 18.5 HP, 603cc or a Briggs & Stratton Commercial 25 HP, 724cc. I can't find any negative info on either engine. The Kawasaki is about $300 more. Is the Kawasaki worth the extra money? Also, does anyone know if they both have the cylinder liners? Thanks for any info.

So 6.5 more hp and $300.00 cheaper. This is a no brainer.

I've had good luck with Briggs. My 24hp twin lawn tractor has 500 hours on it with nothing done except seasonal oil changes. I would also want the larger displacement engine. Theoretically it should put out more power, so overall work less compared to the smaller engine.

I've had good luck with B&S, currently have a V-twin Kaw & love it. Kaw does have iron liners in my model. B&S commercial should too, (I'd think ?)

But I'd opt for the bigger power & save a few $$$

They both have cast iron cylinder liners.
Kawasaki and Briggs HP rating standards are different.

Kawasaki and Briggs HP rating standards are different.

Can you elaborate on those rating standard differences ?

US government has a set of rules that require all engine manufactures to rate it the same way. How is your statement possible? Kawasaki has to follow the same rules as everybody else.

Can you elaborate on those rating standard differences ?

Quoted from the Ferris website.
"All power levels are stated gross horsepower at 3,600 RPM per SAE J1940 as rated by Briggs & Stratton."
"All power levels are stated gross horsepower per SAE J2723 as rated by Kawasaki."
So the HP ratings are not an "apples to apples" comparison.
B&S engines generally are rated with high numbers whereas Kawasaki engines are rated with conservative numbers.
I have looked at both of these SAE ratings in an attempt to see why the differences, too much engineering stuff for me to understand.
B&S doesn't make smaller HP twins in most of their lines so their options are higher HP.

I would choose Briggs also on the assumption that if you ever needed to get parts they would be easier to find.

I personally like the Kawasaki engines. We are running three one with over 1000 hours on it and one with around 800 and they have been excellent so far. We keep the oil changed and air filters clean but other than that we have run the tar out of them under many times brutal conditions.

The Ferris would have a Kawasaki FS 600V or a Briggs Commercial engine. If the Briggs has the Cyclonic Air Filtration System then I would go with it. I have a 30 HP Commercial Turf engine on my Scag Tiger Cub as a repower and I am very pleased with the air filtering ability of this system. As ZTRs are dusty by their nature of design, a substantial air filtering system is critical to engine life. My Scag has a collection system installed which creates much more dust than normal and air filtration is critical to promoting normal engine life.
The Cyclonic Air Filtration System is identified by the bulging air filter housing that houses the round air filter.

Years ago I bought a John Deere tractor with a 25hp briggs and after first year it started smoking. I traded up to a JD LT190 with a 18hp Kaw engine. It didn't pull down like the Briggs and ran flawless for ten years even with the lower hp rating. I just purchased a Ferris 600 and ask for the Kaw engine 18.5 hp . I have been told by small engine repair guy that the best Briggs engine ever made is the Vangaurd. Sometimes a little higher hp doesn't mean better.
