Kawasaki FH601D crankshaft damage

My dads got a JD 6x4 Gas Gator, we took the engine all apart because it was running bad. I think it had low compression so we got a rebuild kit with rings and pistons. The rings had tons of sludge and buildup in them. It has 4K hours on it 😦 lol only kawa could do something like that. Anyway, the crankshaft and bore have some pretty bad damage on the flywheel side and I’m seeking an opinion. See the photos. I can feel the ridges on the flywheel side of the crankcase. I don’t feel anything on the sump side (last photo). Anyone got a fix?

Unfortunately, there is no fix. An extremely talented machinist would argue that they could repair this, but it is not worth the effort. A replacement crankcase or replacement engine would be the best option.

From the pictures is looks like the crank will either need replaced, or remanufactured. The side cover will need replaced due to the bearing damaged, and it looks like the pto bearing can be replaced. Add that to the cylinders that will either need bored or bored and sleeved. So you are in short-block territory.

Looks like that engine has a clear case of lack of lubrication failure or some really contaminated oil has been run. What does the rod bearings surfaced look like on the crank.

Out of curiosity what is the engine spec number?

Either way it looks like someone is going to need some very deep pockets. JD is short block to a FH620D and is asking a mere $3600 - $4000 for the SB.

Might be able go the Kawasaki route but depends on the spec number.

There are no short blocks for FH601D (air cooled) or FD620D (liquid cooled) available directly from Kawasaki.

Briggs and Stratton Vanguard might have a good replacement engine. Honda as well.

Could be a possible solution, but I just don't like going from a water cooled engine to an air cooled engine in equipment

Have friend that has a CV25 Kohler that he swares has 8000 hours on it and still running. Have seen Generacs on Dixie Choppers built in the late 90's and used commercial and still running. No telling the hours on these engines. Briggs Vanguard is an excelent engine as well.

Or Rolls Royce Aviation for those prices LOL. WOW!!!

It is such a shame back about 2012 because of the EPA emission standards. Generac instead of revamping their engines to meet the emissions standards they just kept leaning down the carb which made the engine run hot and caused it to pop the head off the exhaust valve. Then they and Dixie Chopper parted way.
