Kawasaki FC420V engine

I have 14 hp Kawasaki FC420V on a 36 inch walk behind mower. It usually starts on the first pull, but if it doesn't then on the second pull the engine snatches the pull handle back from my hand which is not comfortable. It will then usually start on the third or fourth pull. Any suggestions on what might be happening?

Likely the compression release might be hanging up or the valves need to be adjusted. The compression release mechanism is on the camshaft. Typically they are no issue but there is a spring that may be damaged or some other issue due to wear and tear over the years.

I suggest you start by adjusting the valve clearance first. This service manual will help you with that. https://www.mymowerparts.com/pdf/Ka...20V-FC540V-KAWASAKI-SERVICE-REPAIR-MANUAL.pdf
