Kawasaki Alternator Voltage Ouput

My 18 HP Kawasaki on my John Deere LX280 has to have battery charged about once a month. I checked the voltage output and found it is putting out 21-22 volts AC at fast idle, and 12.2 volts DC at battery. Doesn't it need to be 30-40 volts AC and 13+ volts DC? This model uses a full size automotive battery, BTW, as starter has to pull transmission as well as engine when starting.

Your AC voltage is too low, and it is likely not the charge stator. It may be years of dirt caked on the underside of the flywheel and on the stator.

One problem I run into quite often on older Kawasaki engines like this is the flywheel armature magnets start coming loose and bunching up. When they bunch up the AC current produced is greatly affected and begins to weaken. This can be corrected without having to buy a flywheel.
