I have 12 year old dixie chopper w / a 17 hp kawasaki that runs great but I struggle to get it started. turns over ok just doesn't seem to fire prooperly. I have recnetly repalced starter, both coils, cleaned fuel tank, chnaged fuel filter, and air filter is clean. I'm starting to think it's low compression?
Have you checked to see if the fuel stop solenoid on the bottom of the carb is working properly? If you do not feel it clicking in, when you turn the key to the on position, then it is stuck in the closed position, not allowing fuel to flow.
"Many" times hard/cold starting problems are nothing more than when moving your control to "choke", it is in reality, not fully in choke position on the carb. Adjusting the choke/throttle cable to fully choke the carb is all that is needed. You can visually see this by removing the air filter mount and looking into the throat of the carb, make sure the choke butterfly is completely closed.
