I have a 42 year old Kohler K301 12 hp engine in a Ford LGT125 that I just completed the 3rd overhaul. Block was bored to .40 over and added new piston, rings and valves. Rod and crankshaft were within spec and were reused. I thought I had checked the camshaft end play and assumed it to be within spec. The engine runs good but has a clatter sound that goes away when under load and/or deacelaration. Yesterday I pulled the half moon cover from the block, under the carburetor and next to the points cover, and with my thumb and forefinger, was able to move the shaft from front to back. There was enough space that when the shaft hit the ends, a click sound was made.

So, my question is, could this be what might be making the clatter sound? Thanks
